A New York man visiting his young children in Florida ditched so he could go drink at a bar all night – and into the next morning, police said.
Carl Sidoti, 35, was arrested Tuesday on a child neglect charge after his ex-wife returned to her Longwood residence and found the couple’s children – ages 7 and 9 – all alone, according to an affidavit obtained by the Orlando Sentinel.
Sidoti had been visiting his children after his former wife moved with them to Florida following a divorce. Sidoti was staying with the woman and their children when she went out with some friends. She then returned home just before 11 a.m. to find the door unlocked, WESH reports.
The children, who told police Sidoti left before nighttime to drink beer at a nearby bar, were left alone just a short distance from a pool. Sidoti returned to the residence in an Uber as cops responded to his ex-wife’s call, the affidavit said.
“Man, if I knew this was a felony, I would have never left,” Sidot told officers while being arrested, according to police.
The children were not hurt, investigators said.
A public defender for Sidoti disputed the allegations during his initial court appearance, claiming the children were not in danger since they were in their own home, WESH reported.
A judge later released Sidoti on his own recognizance. Attempts to reach him early Thursday were unsuccessful.
