On Wednesday, Paris police officers stopped a vehicle in the 10 block of 10th St. S.E. for a traffic violation.

Paris Police Chief Bob Hundley said 22-year-old Ajalen Meontre Sanders got out of the vehicle with a pink backpack and started running.

“The department’s canine, Cupa, gave chase,” Hundley said. “Sanders threw the backpack into the street while running as Cupa closed in on him.”

Hundley said when Cupa caught up to Sanders, he slammed Cupa into the side of a parked van — but that didn’t stop him.

“Cupa continued the pursuit and Sanders got on top of the van to elude the dog,” Hundley said.

Cupa kept Sanders at bay while officers caught up and detained him. The backpack was recovered and had a considerable amount of marijuana inside. He was taken to Lamar County Jail and charged with felony possession of marijuana, between 4 ounces-5 pounds, evading arrest and interference with a police service animal.

No bonds have been set. Hundley said Cupa did not sustain any noticeable injuries.
