Man is back in jail for burglary of habitation and assault

A local man is back in jail after allegedly breaking into a home, assaulting the resident and running from police.

Around 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Paris police officers were called to George Wright Homes for reports of a burglary and assault. Curtis Garrett of the Paris Police Department said officers were told 40-year-old Decarlos Alton Smith broke into a home and assaulted the resident.

When officers caught up with Smith, Garrett said he ran from the officer and threw a small baggie of narcotics into a wooded area. Officers were able to catch up with Smith in the 600 block of 6th Street S.W. He was charged with burglary of a habitation, tampering with evidence, evading arrest and a traffic warrant.

He was taken to Lamar County Jail where bonds were set at $18,000.
