The man who abandoned his ex-girlfriend’s baby at a Harlem home last week was trying to get revenge following an ongoing dispute, authorities said on Sunday.
Antonio Staton, 22, reported himself to police around 1 a.m. Sunday and told cops he was trying to get back at the baby’s mother after a previous disagreement.
On Thursday morning, Staton allegedly picked up the child from his daycare center on West 127th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard Thursday morning. He then left the 1-year-old baby boy inside an outdoor foyer at 272 West 132nd Street around 10:35 a.m., police said.
Surveillance footage showed Staton put the baby in the outdoor room and position a table in front of the doorway to prevent the child from leaving. He then left the boy, placed a diaper bag inside a garbage can and walked west on 132nd Street, where he threw out his sweater, police said.
The baby was taken to an area hospital in good health and later reunited with his mother.
Staton, who is homeless, was charged with kidnapping, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child. He is expected to appear in court on Sunday.
