Naked homeless man busted in string of indecent exposures

A naked homeless man who works as a car mechanic has been arrested in a series of indecent exposure incidents in California’s Bay Area and admitted to committing about 25 similar acts, police said.

Joseph Ironteeth Angelle, 31, was arrested while naked Wednesday in San Jose, where cops were looking for his 1998 Toyota Tacoma and spotted him running from an apartment complex, Fremont police said Thursday.

Angelle ran into nearby bushes as officers converged, prompting them to use a Taser to take him into custody. He later confessed while being interviewed by detectives to several recent indecent exposure incidents in Fremont, Newark and Pleasanton. He also told investigators he had indecently exposed himself about 25 other times in the past, police said.

The first case connected to Angelle was in Fremont on May 15, 2017. The most recent occurred on June 27 when two victims in a car saw a naked man touching his genitals while approaching them. Less than an hour later, the nude suspect walked up to a woman who was walking her dog at an apartment complex.

Angelle, who works as a car dealership mechanic, was positively identified by victims through photographic lineups by numerous victims, as well as a distinctive tattoo on his right bicep of a feather hanging from a ring, police said.

Angelle told investigators he had a mailing address in Stockton but told police he was currently homeless and sleeps in his truck. He’s being held at the Santa Rita Jail on charges of indecent exposure, burglary, lewd conduct in public and resisting arrest. Police said other incidents in nearby Pleasanton and Newark remain under investigation and could lead to additional charges.

Angelle is expected to be arraigned Friday afternoon. Police are asking anyone who believes they were victimized by Angelle to call Fremont police at (510) 790-6931.
