A now-retired cop in Chicago sexually abused a woman inside a police station, department officials announced Thursday.
Michael Clifton, 59, was arrested Wednesday after an extensive investigation by the department’s Internal Affairs unit found that he sexually abused a 35-year-old woman while on-duty inside the Calumet District police station in September 2016, department officials said.
Clifton, of Chicago, retired from the department in January 2017, just months after the alleged assault, according to a news release obtained by The Post.
Prosecutors said during Clifton’s bond hearing Thursday that the officer abused the woman after she went to the police station to file a complaint regarding another woman who allegedly hit her at a nightclub, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Clifton then got “flirtatious” with the woman after she mentioned that she was bisexual and had a girlfriend, prompting the officer to ask her to join him in his office alone, according to prosecutors.
Once there, Clifton closed the door and told the woman she “turned him on” before grabbing her by the arm and pulling her out a chair to pin her against a wall with his body. Prosecutors said Clifton then groped the woman’s pelvic area over her clothing and tried to reach into her pants as he made comments about her body and kissed her neck.
Clifton — who has been charged with felony counts of criminal sexual abuse and official misconduct — moved away from the woman when another officer knocked on his door. Prosecutors said the father of her children then drove her to another police station to report the incident. It was not clear if the man had been present at the stationhouse during the alleged assault.
Clifton was ordered held on $100,000 bail, according to the Sun-Times. He’s the second on-duty Chicago police officer in as many weeks to be charged with sexually assaulting a person while in police custody or while they reported a crime.
Carlyle Calhoun, 46, was arrested after prosecutors said he sexually assaulted a male suspect in custody at a hospital, grabbing the man’s genitals before attacking him in a bathroom.
Calhoun also allegedly sucked the man’s toes and forcibly performed a sex act on him. A judge ordered him held on $200,000 bail on charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault and official misconduct, the Chicago Tribune reported. A police spokesman told the newspaper that the department stripped the 10-year veteran cop of his police powers after the allegations surfaced last month and will now move to suspend Calhoun without pay.
