A warped vigilante shot at a man he imagined was having sex with a hooker — but actually fired at an undercover cop leaving his car to pee, according to a report.
Michael Beilby was sick of seeing gangsters, prostitutes and thieves near his home — so when he noticed a man get out of a Jeep and unzip his pants by the passenger door last week, he grew enraged and fired three rounds a couple hundred feet away from the vehicle, he confessed to sheriff’s deputies in Bakersfield, Calif., according to a Bakersfield.com report published Wednesday.
Beilby, 66, said he fired off his rifle just to “get [the man] out of the mood to have sex” — because he thought a prostitute was in the car with him.
But Beilby didn’t realize the man was actually a plainclothes sheriff’s deputy working undercover and just leaving his car to urinate, according to court documents reviewed by the website.
Calling his action “felony stupid,” Beilby admitted he should have known better than to fire and told investigators, “I don’t blame the officer for being really angry with me,” according to the documents.
“But most people that are doing illegal things, that’s enough that they don’t come back,” he added. “If I yell at them, they don’t care.”
The unarmed deputy, identified only as D. Manriquez, jumped into his Jeep and drove about 100 yards as he reported the shooting to his supervisor.
When Beilby was nabbed later, he reportedly said: “I didn’t know you were a cop. I didn’t know who you were.”
He also said he was an excellent shot — and could hit a quarter with his .22 at 50 yards — but intentionally aimed away from the would-be john because he just wanted to scare him off.
Beilby is charged with assault with a semi-automatic firearm on a person and recklessly discharging a firearm. He’s out on bail and due back in court July 25.
